True Grit QCCQ
Q—Quote
Select a quote from the pages you have read over the past week that is significant.
Place type quote at the top of the page, in the following format:
"Jim Gallien had driven four miles out of Fairbanks when he spotted the hitchhiker in the snow beside the road, thumb raised high, shivering in the gray Alaska dawn. He didn't appear to be very old: eighteen, maybe nineteen at most. A rifle protruded from the young man's backpack, but he looked friendly enough; a hitchhiker with a Remington semi automatic isn't the sort of thing that gives motorists pause in the forty-ninth state. Gallien steered his truck onto the shoulder and told the kid to climb in." Jon Krakauer, from Into the Wild, p. 3-4.
“That is my father.” I stood there looking at him. “What this!” I would not rest easy until that Louisiana cur was roasting. Charles Portis, from True Grit, page 109.
C—Comment
Comment on the significance of quote. Explain why it is significant in the book and explain why you chose it. Feel free to discuss the literal or figurative meaning(s) of the quote, how it relates to the larger context of the book and/or the stylistic devices used by the author.
This quote show great significance to the quote because it shows the love that Mattie loves her father and that she will do whatever it takes to get revenge. In the quote she says “I would not rest easy” and that is what stood out to me the most and the reason for why I chose it. Mattie never has any regrets and this proves that she will take desperate measures to do what she wants which is revenge. The quotes's intentions are clear throughout the entire novel which is her goal and her strength and bravery to accomplish what she set out to do.
C—Connection
Discuss connections related to the quote. How does the quote connect with earlier topics or literary devices in the book? How do you think this quote will connect with later sections in the book? How can you connect the quote with other books you have read or current content in Humanities class? Does the quote have any personal meaning to you?
The quote that I chose connects with other themes in the book which include love, pain and courage as a teenager which is present throughout the story. This book is similar to Hunger Games in the way that Katniss did not have a father when she was young like Mattie and how that shapes their personality and goals in life. Also, the common theme of teenage battles is apparent in the other two books that I read for my honors Humanities assignments. This quote shows me that it is important to be selfless especially when it comes to family. This has personal meaning to me because it reminds me to set priorities. I sometimes put dance and homework in front of my family and that leads to unhealthy relationships. I need to work on doing more things with and for my family so that they can see just how much I love them and would do anything for them. Mattie’s character is so kind-hearted towards family which is a great quality in my opinion.
Q—Questions
What questions do you now have about the book? What does this make you want to know or learn about?
Two questions that I have about True Grit are what does Charles Portis want us to feel in this book? I know there are parts that make us happy and some that make us sad but I want to know his purpose and his desired connection. Also, at the end when Mattie barely has a left arm does that symbolize something?
