Growth and Development
What are you most proud of and why? Be specific and use evidence from class.
Over the past three weeks I have shown responsibility, maturity and dedication. I am proud of my attitude and work ethic during class and at home for homework. However I am most proud of the Collatz Orbit activity. I came up with a creative way to find a pattern by exploring sets of even and odd numbers in the original collatz pattern. It took three different graphs to come up with my final product. I took the critique/gallery walk seriously because it helped my graph a lot. It has only been a few weeks but I feel good and on top of my assignments and look forward for the next check in to see where I have improved and progressed.
How are you feeling about math right now? Be specific and use evidence from class.
Currently in math I am not feeling very confident. Some of the topics we have been talking about is review from middle school but some of the new concepts I have found to be more confusing and hard to follow. I believe part of the reason why I feel behind in math is because I missed two days of school. However, I had a lunch meeting with Mele at lunch and tried to do some of the homework problems. This helped me a little bit but as soon as I went home to finish the problems I didn’t complete, I was stuck again. I think what might help me is taking better notes. I write everything down that Mele has on the board but I need to ask more clarifying questions. I also think I need to make a “cheat sheet” with all of the rules because most of the mistake I am making seem to be simple mistakes that can be fixed fairly easily. I studied for the quiz and have not taken it yet but I need to adjust my learning habits to make sure I am not falling behind in math. I am going to try hard this week to communicate with my teacher and stay focused during class so that at home I do not feel anxious and frustrated.
What are you most proud of and why? Be specific and use evidence from class.
Last week I secured my internship in London, England to work with middle schools to implement project based style learning techniques in a public school system. This opportunity has taken a lot of my time and pushed the importance of my academics after my internship. I missed four math classes in one week because I was giving tours, participating in lunch panels, leading project tunings and had lunch and after school meetings with teachers and about internship. To say the least, I was very busy so I missed a lot of new concepts, notes, homework, classwork and a quiz in math. With this being said, I am most proud of the effort that I have put in to staying caught up and turning in all of my assignments. I have done my part in communicating with my teacher but I understand that I am one of 50 students who need her help. I am proud that I have taken the initiative and borrowed class notes from two of my peers to compare and contrast the information. I also got all of the homework that I missed, tried my best and turned it in on time. I retook the quiz and haven’t received it back yet but I tried my best having missed the lesson that the quiz was on. Although I don’t fully understand some of the things we are doing in class, I have used my resources to help the help I need in order to be successful. Progress reports came out and I am not completely satisfied with my grade. I will continue to work hard and communicate with my teacher to make sure I do not fall behind. Overall, math is a hard subject for me and I am proud that I am giving it my all to maintain a solid grade while trying to grasp new concepts.
How are you progressing on any one of your goals set at the beginning of this year? Be specific and use evidence to support your claims.
At the beginning of the year I set some goals in math to see my progress over the course of this year. One goal I set was to challenge myself and take honors. I thought that it would be best for me to wait until next semester to do math honors because I am already taking honors humanities and biology and might overwhelm myself. Another goal I set was to stay organized. I have turned in all of my classwork and homework and have been filling out my planner to stay on top of things. I have also communicated very well with my peers and my teacher. I continue to set goals for myself and put in all of my effort into understanding math concepts while maintaining a good grade.
What are some things that you are wondering or are curious about beyond, but related to, some of the topics we have discussed in class? These could be questions or comments.
Some things that you are wondering and I am curious about beyond, but related to, some of the topics we have discussed in class is logarithmic functions and matrix equations. I have seen my friends math notebook and they had problems about the remainder theorem and the rational root theorem and it looks interesting to me. As strange as it is I like math that you have to do a lot of number crunching rather than theoretical topics because it seems repetitive and useless to be honest. I would rather do more proof and other problems where you have to solve and graph.
