Go Ask Alice QCCQ
Q—Quote
Select a quote from the pages you have read over the past week that is significant.
Place type quote at the top of the page, in the following format:
"Jim Gallien had driven four miles out of Fairbanks when he spotted the hitchhiker in the snow beside the road, thumb raised high, shivering in the gray Alaska dawn. He didn't appear to be very old: eighteen, maybe nineteen at most. A rifle protruded from the young man's backpack, but he looked friendly enough; a hitchhiker with a Remington semi automatic isn't the sort of thing that gives motorists pause in the forty-ninth state. Gallien steered his truck onto the shoulder and told the kid to climb in." Jon Krakauer, from Into the Wild, p. 3-4.
"I'm partly somebody else trying to fit in and say the right things and do the right thing and be in the right place and wear what everybody else is wearing. Sometimes I think we're all trying to be shadows of each other." Anonymous, from Go Ask Alice, page 16.

Comment on the significance of the quote. Explain why it is significant in the book and explain why you chose it. Feel free to discuss the literal or figurative meaning(s) of the quote, how it relates to the larger context of the book and/or the stylistic devices used by the author.
This quote is significant because it summarizes her confused feelings. Alice is constantly feeling like she is being pulled in all different directions and is trying to figure out which direction is the right one for her. She compares herself to others which is what drives her unhealthy thinking. She feels very alone and in this quote she expresses that she wants to be independent but it is hard to with the society that she lives in and the pressures that come along with it. This quote is significant to the book and I chose it because it is easy to relate to and shows the reader her thought process and her familiar feeling of vulnerability. The author was being brutally honest since this was her diary and I think she was writing what a lot of other teenagers think and feel.
C—Connection
Discuss connections related to the quote. How does the quote connect with earlier topics or literary devices in the book? How do you think this quote will connect with later sections in the book? How can you connect the quote with other books you have read or current content in Humanities class? Does the quote have any personal meaning to you?
This quote connects with later sections in the book where she faces another situation when she doesn’t do the right thing by turning to drugs. Throughout the diary entries we see Alice make poor decisions and regretful things that hurt her and her family. The quote symbolizes in the beginning that she wants to be perfect but can only do the best she can. This book relates to the two other books that I read for my honors assignment which revolve around the theme of teenage struggle and how to cope with challenges and pain. The quote has personal meaning to me because, like Alice, I feel the pressure from myself, family, friends, teachers and just try my best to fit in and follow on my path. I have gotten pretty lost before but this has shown me that everything has a learning lesson and I can only be the best I can be.
Q—Questions
What questions do you now have about the book? What does this make you want to know or learn about?
My biggest question is, “Is this story true?” I have heard and read that this diary was actually not real and was a mormon librarian who tried to scare children away from drugs so I would love to know the truth. Also, why does Alice call her diary Mary? Lastly, does following the Jewish religion have any effect or add any pressure to make good choices or change her perspective on some of the bad things she gets into.
