Top Five List
.) One of my biggest passions is dance. My first glimpse of dance was when I was three years old when my parents enrolled me in a ballet/tap class at a local studio. For the entire 45 minute class I refused to dance. I would cry and hold on to my mothers hand until they handed out scented stickers at the end of class and I had to stop crying in order to get one. It was not until I was fourteen that I took my second swing at it when my friend told me to try a hip hop class with her. In the beginning I was very uncomfortable and could not pick up the choreography very fast so I wanted to give up again. Thanks to my parents support and advice I stuck with it and with lots of practice, I have become a much better well-rounded dancer. I am currently on a performance crew that goes around San Diego arenas and stadiums to perform and I practice six styles of dance. My favorite style is hip hop because I feel the most confident and it is the time when I can let my hair down and express myself freely.
.) One of my favorite things to do in school is having socratic seminars and book discussions. Last year in Humanities class we read The Great Gatsby and one of my favorite things about reading the book was coming into class the next day and talking about what we read. I love to dissect texts and analyse symbols, messages and themes.
.) One of the best feelings I have ever experienced in my life is when I teach someone something they don't know. Ever since I was five years old I wanted to become a teacher (in case becoming a horse failed). I would make my friends sit on my floor as I taught a lesson on my whiteboard. As soon as I understand a problem or topic I am eager to explain it to my friends, family and peers to make it easy for them. For my internship I was given the opportunity to go to England where I connected with educators and introduced them to project based learning. For an entire week I took over a seventh grade classroom and created my own project and had my own rules to create the most productive learning environment which meant taking away their iPads. The students instantly became more engaged and were excited to work because they were not being taught in a regular setting. From teaching in England to helping my little brother with a math problem, I am fulfilled when I help someone achieve one of their goals.
.) Although, I would not say that I am "well-travelled" I have seen some beautiful sights when I have gone on trips. I love family vacations and although they can be stressful leading up to it with the packing and booking activities, when I am not in my normal environment I am a lot more relaxed and become a lot more open minded and patient. My top favorite places I have travelled are Maui, London and New York City. All of these places are very different but I get the same refreshing and peaceful feeling when I have visited them.
.) Music is a huge part of my life. I started taking guitar lessons when I was twelve and fell in love. After two months of learning the basics I stopped taking classes because I just wanted to write my own tabs and learn the songs I like. I then was so eager to play and make my own music and sound. During one summer I taught myself to play piano, drums and tap. I plan on teaching myself how to play violin when I get the time. I also like to mess around with garageband and record original songs. I listen to all genres from R&B to country to classical. I can talk about music and listen to it for hours. The only time I don't listen to music is when I am writing (unless it is instrumental or an unfamiliar song) because I will write the lyrics instead of analysing Shakespeare.
