The Fault In Our Stars QCCQ
Q—Quote
Select a quote from the pages you have read over the past week that is significant.
Place type quote at the top of the page, in the following format:
"Jim Gallien had driven four miles out of Fairbanks when he spotted the hitchhiker in the snow beside the road, thumb raised high, shivering in the gray Alaska dawn. He didn't appear to be very old: eighteen, maybe nineteen at most. A rifle protruded from the young man's backpack, but he looked friendly enough; a hitchhiker with a Remington semi automatic isn't the sort of thing that gives motorists pause in the forty-ninth state. Gallien steered his truck onto the shoulder and told the kid to climb in." Jon Krakauer, from Into the Wild, p. 3-4.
“Maybe 'okay' will be our 'always’.” John Green, from The Fault In Our Stars, page 73.

Comment on the significance of quote. Explain why it is significant in the book and explain why you chose it. Feel free to discuss the literal or figurative meaning(s) of the quote, how it relates to the larger context of the book and/or the stylistic devices used by the author.
This is the most well-known quote from The Fault In Our Stars by John Green. The word ‘okay’ is Hazel and Augustus’s way of seeing how the other person is feeling kind of like an “inside joke”. One of them would ask ‘Okay?’ and the other would respond with an ‘Okay’. The two created ‘okay’ one night at one in the morning when neither of them would hang up the phone. They were talking about the last kiss that each of them had previous to meeting. Augustus brought up his ex-girlfriend Caroline Mathers who recently passed away. Isaac, Hazel and Augustus’ support group friend, and his girlfriend Monica has their word ‘Always’. Whenever they kissed they said ‘always’ to show that if this was their last kiss they would always love each other if something happened to either of them. I chose this quote because it shows that relationships are like two way streets. They both want the other person to feel safe and loved and by asking them if they are okay it reminds them that they have someone that cares deeply about them. I think John Green used this quote to as a device to bring the reader closer into their small special moments. I am personally very glad that John Green included this quote because it made me realize that although they are not like every other teenager they still go through awkward beginning stages like any crush which was uplifting after hearing bad news.
C—Connection
Discuss connections related to the quote. How does the quote connect with earlier topics or literary devices in the book? How do you think this quote will connect with later sections in the book? How can you connect the quote with other books you have read or current content in Humanities class? Does the quote have any personal meaning to you?
This quote connects with the theme present in the beginning of the book which is how to cope with physical and emotional struggles as a teenager. Since I have read the entire book I know that quote appears many times throughout the book especially when they are faced with a challenge.
This quote connects to the two other books that I am reading for my honors assignment that has revolves around the same theme of teenage angst and battles. This quote doesn’t directly have any personal meaning to me since it is just the word okay but I do have ques that I have with my family to let them know how I am feeling.
Q—Questions
What questions do you now have about the book? What does this make you want to know or learn about?
I have two main questions about The Fault In Our Stars by John Green. The first question I have is, “What is the reason behind the title?” There is a part in the story when Augustus quotes Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar when he says, “The fault, dear Brutus, is not in our stars, but in ourselves, that we are underling.” I do not see the connection of this quote to the story. Also, I wish John Green would reveal more about Hazel’s life after she loses Augustus. Overall, I loved the journey that this book took me on. I finished The Fault In Our Stars in a few hours and would recommend it to all teenagers and adults.
